Wake Up and Smell the… Lavender

Bee enjoying fresh Lavender flowersLavender is one of my favorite scents. I like it so much that we planted a patch of the stuff in our backyard. The flowers perfume the air and attract bees. Dried lavender makes a great sachet and a thoughtful gift for friends. I use it to scent my bathwater and to flavor tea or lemonade or even beer, as well as add depth to various recipes.

On that note, I think I’ll snip some now…

Until Monday, and wishing you a pretty-scented weekend,

Thanks for the Memories… and Other Stuff

gratit

I was having a bad day. Everything seemed to be going wrong. First, I stubbed my toe, hard, on the way to the bathroom. I broke my favorite mug. Then the toilet overflowed. Without warning, my Word program shut down and I lost half a very good scene that I had failed to save. (You can bet I won’t do that again!)

And on and on.

It was enough to make me scream!

frustration-4837199

Then I thought about all the good things in my life that I was thankful for. The love and support of family and friends. The book I’d started reading and couldn’t wait to get back to. Suddenly I felt a lot better.

There is always something to be grateful for. When I remember that, the challenges of life are easier to bear.

Until Friday, and wishing you a gratitude-filled day,

Ann

Crazy Is as Crazy Does… Or Maybe Not

One of Jackson Pollock 's many paintings

One of Jackson Pollock ‘s many paintings

I never understood Jackson Pollock’s work–and then I visited a whole room of his paintings at MoMA New York. They were huge and puzzling, but as I stood before one particular oil painting, I got all tingly and excited. Then I chuckled.

Why? Because looking at the painting was liking looking into my own mind. Yep, it’s messy in there.

Such is the working of the creative mind. And that’s all I’m going to say about it. 🙂

Until Wednesday, and wishing you a mind filled with creativity and a healthy sense of humor,

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for… Pie!!!

butterscotch pie

Every time I look at this photo of this butterscotch pie I made, my mouth waters. This recipe calls for real Scotch. The alcohol cooks out and leaves a rich, nuanced taste that skyrockets this particular pie into food heaven. 🙂

It looks hard, but I promise you, it isn’t.

Butterscotch Pie

One 9-inch baked pie crust (recipe at the end… or use your own)

Filling:
2 cups 2% milk
1 1/2 cups half and half (you could probably substitute whole milk to cut down on the richness)
6 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups light brown sugar, packed
3 egg yolks (save the whites for the meringue top)
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
2 Tbsp Scotch whiskey
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
Meringue top:
3 egg whites
pinch salt
2 Tbsp sugar

In a large saucepan, combine milk and half and half and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Turn off heat and set aside.
In a large, heavy skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Stir in brown sugar and cook 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly, to caramelize the mixture. (You will smell a characteristic nutty-caramel flavor odor when the butter browns, signaling that the mixture is ready.)
Whisking constantly, gradually add the brown sugar mixture to the hot milk mixture. If mixture is not smooth, blend for 20 seconds with a hand mixer or pour through a fine sieve.
Put the egg yolks in a medium bowl. Whisk in about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture. Whisk in cornstarch and salt until dissolved. Whisk the cornstarch mixture back into the hot milk mixture in the saucepan. Add the Scotch and whisk in.
Whisking constantly, cook over medium-high heat until thick and just boiling. When the mixture thickens, the whisk will leave trail marks on the bottom of the pot and the mixture will have a few large bubbles boiling up to the top.
Remove from heat and whisk in the vanilla extract. Pour into the pre-baked pie shell and cover with meringue. Then chill at least two hours or overnight.
Meringue:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Whip whites and salt to soft peaks, then add sugar and whip until sugar is dissolved and whites are glossy. Spread meringue on top of the slightly cooled pie and bake for five minutes or until lightly browned. Chill as above.

Crust (made in a food processor):
Makes enough for bottom and top or two bottoms
2 cups flour
3/4 cup butter, straight from the refrigerator and quickly cut into chunks
1/4 cup shortening (I use the white Crisco)
6 or more Tbsp ice water
Put flour into food processor fitted with a metal blade. Add butter and shortening and pulse a little at a time until mixture is crumbly and about the size of peas. Don’t over mix. Add water one Tbsp at a time, pulsing briefly with each addition. As soon as the mixture forms a ball, stop (you may need more or less than 6 Tbsp water).
Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate 30 minutes. Divide dough in half and roll half to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place in pan. Bake at 425 degrees until golden brown. Roll out the other half, put in pan, wrap in freezer paper or freezer bag and freeze unbaked for later.

Until Monday, and wishing you a pie-filled weekend,

Ann

A Cluttered Room is Creativity’s Playground… Or Is It?

clutter

I don’t know that I agree with this. There are articles in support of clutter and creativity, and articles touting neat and clean in order to be creative. My opinion lies somewhere in the middle.

I don’t mind a little clutter, because let’s face it, life is messy. But too much stuff and mess weights me down and saps my energy. Cleaning isn’t exactly my favorite task, but a good cleaning and either giving away or tossing out “stuff” that has piled up  always energizes me.

Yet despite my feelings about too much clutter, when I’m in the middle of a writing project, watch out! In no time, my office fills with hastily scribbled notes from those times when I’m away from the computer and inspiration strikes, and other papers that seem to multiply all by themselves.  My writing space slowly fills with paper and research materials, to the point that I would never invite anyone inside. Ugh, I hate that–but as it happens time and again, I’ve come to accept it as a part of my writing process.

But when I finish a project… This is when I toss most of those papers and file away the rest. Ah. Then I can move on and start something new.

Until Friday, and wishing you a life that is minimally bogged down in clutter,

Ann

Don’t Worry… Be Happy

happy life

So true. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s that trying to please others never works. Mainly because I can’t control what other people think or care about.

Making money for money’s sake isn’t the answer, either. Not that I’m against making money. 🙂 But no amount of financial riches will make a person happy, not deep down, where it counts.

What I can control are my own thoughts and pleasing myself. Setting concrete, achievable  goals and taking the necessary steps to get there… As Einstein says in the quote, this is the ticket to a happy life.

Why concrete and achievable? Because pie-in-the-sky goals that are impossible to reach doom us to failure. Sure, it’s good to dream big, and I do! But those concrete goals that can be measured in small steps and that I can eventually reach–they are golden. Bonus: they could even lead toward achieving those big dreams.

Reaching a goal is so satisfying!  But don’t stop there. Once you reach that goal, it’s time to set another. After you reach it, set another.

Food for thought, yes?

Until Wednesday, and wishing you goals that you can achieve,

Ann

Muse, grant me patience and wisdom

patience and wisdom

I love this! I happen to be short on patience–except when I work. Writing takes patience, diligence, and discipline–lots of all three.

So how did an impatient person like me choose writing as a profession? Beats me. 🙂

Actually, I think writing chose me. Stories filled my head and I had to put them on paper. Not just for me, but for others to enjoy.

When I write, the story is my entire focus. I forget about the future and the past and live totally in the now of the characters and the world I am creating. It’s magical!

snoopy_writing

I am passionate about writing and hopelessly addicted to it, and the magic and the joy of putting the story on paper (as well as the sweat and tears that are  part of the process) all contribute to that passion.

As for wisdom part of the top image, you know what they say: You finally get wise… and then you die. Nothing we can do about the dying part, but my plan is to keep growing (mentally, but hopefully not physically 🙂 ) and learning. How about you?

Until Monday, and wishing you patience, wisdom and a terrific weekend,

Ann
