Stepping Off the Cliff

take_the_step

I’m finally taking the plunge–getting ready to self-publish three books from my back list. I’ m also making plans to self-publish more. For some reason, taking this necessary step in my career is scary… And yet at the same time, also very exciting.

That’s all I want to say just now, but I promise to keep you posted.

Watch for a delicious recipe that I’ll post on Friday.

Until then, and wishing you that first little step,

Ann

Pocket Full of … Magic

magic-hat

I believe in magic. It is everywhere–provided we open our eyes and see it. For example, not long ago, I was watering the back garden, as I often do on an early summer morning. Suddenly a hummingbird appeared and landed right on top of the spray!

He (his iridescent green color told me he was a male) wasn’t more than 3 feet from my face and looked straight at me, his amazing wings blurring with their rapid and incessant fluttering, while his feet moved as he balanced on the spray. I wanted to call out for someone to see this amazing sight. I wanted to take a photo and capture the moment. Of course, I didn’t do anything at all, just stood transfixed until he flew off. Now, that’s what I call magic! I will never forget it.

But more mundane things are also magic. The sight of the sun, glistening on water. I can almost imagine a sparkly creature floating on the surface, providing me with what-if moments of fun.

The same can be said of the sun on autumn leaves.

Or the magical smells that come from a soft rain. I could go on and on. Instead, I’ll leave you to find your own magical moments.

Until Wednesday, and wishing you magic everywhere you look,

Ann

Like Houseguests and Fish… A Bad Attitude Stinks After 3 Days

positive attitude

Great quote! I happen to be one of those glass half-full people, and my positive attitude has served me well.

There is nothing as difficult to be around as a person with a “woe is me” attitude. You know what I mean–a person who is bound and determined to feel sorry for themselves and their situation, no matter how many positive things are happening in their lives.

Sure, we all have down times. But come on, there is always a silver lining behind that dark cloud. (And there it is, that half-full attitude of mine.)

Even the small stuff. This is why I use the following bit of wisdom as a guide whenever my attitude takes a dip south.

will-this-matter-a-year-from-now

Take the other day, when I was late meeting friends for dinner. Naturally, the driver in front of me was doing 10 miles under the speed limit, for no particular reason that I could see. I was getting upset. Then I thought, will this matter a year from now? Instant attitude shift. I told myself that on the plus side, the driver in front of me was keeping me from speeding and a possible traffic ticket. Instant calm.

Until Friday and wishing you a positive attitude,

Ann

Happy Labor Day!

no substitute for hard work

I’m all about hard work and that feeling of accomplishment when a task is completed. For me, there is nothing more satisfying than watching the pages in a work in progress add up. Plodding along, adding those seemingly small chunks of daily pages, until suddenly the rough draft of a novel is finished and I type, The End.

the-end

Fabulous feeling! Of course, those words don’t mean the work is finished, not by a long shot. But the story is written. Now it’s ready for editing and polishing, which often take just as long as the process of writing the first draft.

Sometimes though, we all need to step back and refresh. Today is Labor Day, a day to acknowledge and celebrate all workers. If you have to work today, we can all still celebrate with gratitude and a big thank-you. If you are lucky enough to have the day off, take a moment to appreciate yourself for all that you do.

Until Wednesday, and Happy Labor Day to one and all,

Ann
