Seeing the Glass as… A Glass

Daily-Rituals-That-Remind-You-Whats-Important-blog

I don’t know about you, but most of the time I tend to see the glass as half full. I see it as half empty only when circumstances are completely beyond my realm, those instances when I can’t put a positive spin on something or figure out a way to change an outcome. Politics come to mind, but I don’t even want to go there.

I have found that daily rituals help me to keep my glass on the full side. Some of my daily rituals are: exercising first thing in the morning. Eating a healthy breakfast. Drinking a satisfying cup of strong coffee with a shot of half and half. Reading a motivational or inspiration saying (I especially like the ones that appear my email inbox–here are two: http://www.queenofyourownlife.com, which is weekly, and www.tut.com). And then, sitting down and getting to work–writing.

Writing stories is my livelihood. I am blessed that this work is also my passion. It keeps me grounded, almost like meditation. When I am working, I forget my problems and the dizzying list of busywork that fills my brain. You know what I mean– errands, appointments, phone calls, bills. Stuff that keeps me running here, there, and back again. Blech.

Speaking of work, it’s time to get back to it.

Until Friday, and wishing you nourishing rituals in your own life,

Ann

Find the Genius Within

I’m feeling philosophical today…
gen·ius
ˈjēnyəs/
noun
noun: genius; plural noun: geniuses; plural noun: genii
  1.
exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability.
  2. a person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative, either generally or in some particular respect.
synonyms: brilliant person, gifted person, mastermind, Einstein, intellectual, great intellect, brain, mind

secret of genius

We’ve all witnessed true enthusiasm in a child. Just watch a young boy or girl encounter any experience anyplace. Kids live in the here and now, where every moment brings wonder, curiosity and joy. And boy, do they show it. They jump. Giggle. Squeal. Touch. Sing. Spin around. Dance.

They don’t care what people think of them, don’t know that it matters.

It’s magic.

They are magic.

As a child, I shared that same enthusiasm. So did you. If we can touch the spark still inside of us and live in the moment, even for a moment… knowing that there is a future ahead and responsibilities now and in that future… if we can do this, then maybe that childlike spirit hiding inside will come out and play. It wants to,  has been waiting for such a long time to experience the joy and magic, that bit of genius that is uniquely yours and mine.

Will you join me in letting your child spirit come out and play?

Until Friday, and wishing you a fun playdate with your child spirit,

Ann

Hump Day Wednesday: Make It Happen

good day

It’s going to be a good day! What would happen if this was your first thought as you lay in bed after waking up this morning? You’d get pretty much what you expected–even if some of it didn’t go as well as you wanted.

Lately I’ve been kick-starting my day with this very thought, and you know what? It really, really helps. Even when I had to pare down my manuscript during a sweltering heatwave, with tons of other things on my to-do list. I made up my mind to take each day as it came, put a positive spin on whatever happened, and make the day a good one. And I did, and finding the silver lining turned what could have been a dreary, oh, no! experience into something positive.

Starting my day with a slant on the positive, and finding the silver lining in whatever happens–this could become a habit. Give it a try and see what you think.

Until Friday, and wishing you a very good day,

Ann

Hump Day Wednesday: Summer Abundance

raspberries

Our raspberry patch is alive with color! Early in the morning, I go out and pick fresh raspberries, which I add to my breakfast cereal or smoothie. Such a lovely addition, and so tasty! Sometimes I make jam. It’s so easy, and small batches work well. With small batches I can skip sterilizing the jars and simply refrigerate what I make for eating now. But if you want to make a large quantity, sterilize your jars first.

raspberry jam

Easy raspberry jam

Use equal parts sugar and raspberries. Turn on the heat to high and pour raspberries into a heavy saucepan. Mash slightly with a masher or a fork. Add sugar. Boil hard for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Lower heat to maintain a soft boil and cook until mixture thickens, approximately 5 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching. Pour into a clean glass jar. (If making a large quantity of jam, make sure the jars and sterilized and hot. Use canning lids to seal.) When cool, refrigerate your small batch. If you use the sterilize method, store your jam in a dark, cool, dry place.

Yum!!

Until Friday, and wishing you fabulous raspberries,

Ann

Hump Day Wednesday: Motto for Life

restaurant

Front steps of Travelers Thali House

Recently, I ate at dinner at Travelers Thali House, an Seattle Indian food restaurant where the chef makes everything homemade, right there on the premises! Fresh and absolutely fabulous. Even if I hadn’t planned to stop in and eat here, the homey look of the place (a big old house, converted into a restaurant) and the message on the steps would’ve drawn me in. Cook with love, eat with passion–who could resist that? 🙂

This great motto applies not only to food, but to life! Cook up whatever you do in your life with love, and be passionate about it.

If that isn’t a recipe for success…

And look at the spices for sale! They fill  an entire wall of the restaurant.

Wall of spices for sale

So many spices to try. This, too, could be a metaphor for flavoring that passion with new fragrances and tastes.

I am fortunate that I found my life’s work as a writer, and that with a little help from the endless choice of spices, my passion for creating stories and sharing them with my lovely readers continues to grow.

Until Friday, feeling blessed and wishing you a life of passion and joy,

Ann

Hump Day Wednesday: It’s All in the Definition

optimist cha cha

The way we define the world determines how we see life and how we react to the things that happen in our lives. I like this definition for its positive slant on what is inevitable for everyone.

Like it or not, life is messy. It is also a balancing act. With frustrating frequency, curve balls fly at us, seemingly from out of nowhere, and cause us to lose our balance. Failing, stumbling backward and/or heading off on the wrong track are realities we’d prefer to avoid. When that isn’t possible, seeing those setbacks as part of the dance of life makes it easier to pick ourselves up and try again.

Cha-cha on!

Until Friday, and wishing you joy,

Ann

Hump Day Wednesday: Make Your Thoughts Count

thoughts can change your world

Lately, this little gem has been on my mind a lot. I realize that I hold myself back with limiting thoughts. I’m thinking writing here, but other things as well.

Great, but… Now that I acknowledge having those limiting thoughts, what’s the next step?

Why, to simply let go of them.

Not so easy, you’re thinking. I know, because I used to think the same way.  The sad truth of the matter is that I’ve been clinging to these limiting thoughts as an excuse to do what I’ve always done. Not that that’s bad. I’ve had a fair amount of success.

And hey, doing the same old, same old is comfortable. Moving in different directions is a bit scary, like standing at the edge of a cliff without a net. But at the same time, change is exciting, a place where Nooooo! Stay back here, where it’s safe! meets Here I go–Whee!

Lately I’ve taken to repeating a powerful sentence at least once every day. I’m eager to share the words with you. Feel free to repeat them yourself. I am letting go of limiting thoughts and creating limitless possibilities and dreams for myself today.

What a great statement, huh? And it’s working. Already my thoughts are changing, and wow! With the changes come an unexpected burst of energy and enthusiasm that’s been missing from my life for a while now. I can hardly wait to find out where my new way of thinking takes me!!

Until Friday and wishing you a world of limitless possibilities,

Ann
